Why does the Description line in Banking import shortens?

Hi all,

Is there a way to bring in full description in to QB Bank import? It seems to get rid of last part of it. I can't apply auto rules as there is important information in the remaining missing part of the description.

Why does the Description line in Banking import shortens?

Hi there, arsalanICAN.

It could be the Show bank details option in Online Banking is turn off. That's why the Description line or the remaining part of the description is missing.

To sort this issue, I suggest turning on the Show bank details option from the Banking page in QuickBooks so the full description show up as expected. Please note that when turning on this option, the description shows under Bank detail column.

Here's how:

1. Click Banking at the left panel. Then, Banking section.

2. Click the Gear icon located at the banking page.

3. Put a checkmark in the Show bank details box.

I attached a screenshot below for visual reference.

You may refer to this article on how to review downloaded transactions from your financial institution so you can assign and categorise them: Assign, categorise, edit, and add your downloaded banking transactions.

Why does the Description line in Banking import shortens?

Hi,

I also have this query. When I upload bank transactions through csv file. It only shows three coloumns, Data, Amount and Description. I want to ask is there any option for Cheque/Reference No also. I am adding cheque no in Description coloumn but when I open the transaction journal after matching the transaction I couldn't find that description.

 Hello, saadjawed,

I'd like to share some details about the current mapping fields when importing your bank entries.

At this time, only the Date, Description, and the Amount can be mapped when uploading your bank transactions to QuickBooks.

It's a good workaround to add the cheque or reference numbers on the Description column. However if you need to put them on the Cheque no. or Reference no. box, you'll want to manually add them after categorising or matching the entries.

Though, you can also send feedback to our developers about adding more fields for mapping in QuickBooks Online. You can go to the Gear icon menu, then select Feedback

They might consider your idea and improve the bank import processes in the future.

After categorising your transactions, do you need help reconciling your bank? This article can help you through the reconciliation process: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

If you have more questions about managing your bank entries or any other processes in QuickBooks, feel free to reply here. You can also create a new thread. I'm always here to help.

Why does the Description line in Banking import shortens?

Hello James,

Thanks for the response. I am adding cheque no in description column but when I see the transaction journal the Memo/Description shows empty and I have checked all types of report the cheque number doesn't appear

Thanks for getting back to us, @saadjawed.

I have some information about adding the cheque number in the description field. If you've matched the transaction, the description info won't be visible in the reports. It will only be viewed if you added the transaction.

You'll want to verify if the transaction you're looking for was added or matched.

On the other hand, if you're using a CSV file, you'll want to add the transaction in QuickBooks to enter the cheque number.

Feel free to browse this link in case you need help in reconciling your downloaded transactions: Reconcile an account.

Please know that you're always welcome to swing by if you have other questions or concerns with bank transactions. I'm here to help. Have a great one.

Why is this not set by default? There are some horribly abominable changes automatically made to some transactions which impacts auto-adding rules and can be confusing and tedious when the description automatically changes to something completely unrecognisable from the original description in the transaction record.

Why does the Description line in Banking import shortens?

Hi ThomasTiver,

Thanks for joining this thread!

There are settings that are not pre-set by the system to give customers the option to customize the setting in QuickBooks Online. QuickBooks Online is dependent on the information downloaded from your bank. It's best to check the bank details shown in your bank statement and cross-match them to the downloaded bank feeds. If you've found out that QuickBooks Online did not import the correct bank description, I'd recommend contacting our Customer Care Team. That way, one of our support care agents can check your account in a secure form and escalate the issue.
