Transaction skipped on .OFX file import

Recently Bank Australia stopped supporting bank feeds to QBO. Now I export transactions manually and import them to QBO. There are only two overlapping formats between the bank and QBO: .csv and .ofx. The Open File Exchange Format (.ofx) is the richer format being based on XML so I would prefer to use this. It doesn't require all the mucking around with defining columns each import etc. that CSV files do.

However, I discovered a bug recently where a transaction is skipped each month. It's always the same transaction. I raised the issue with Quickbooks and of course they blamed the bank export and when I raised it with the bank, they suggested it was because the transaction being skipped was an international transaction and Quickbooks wasn't handling it properly. No reply from Quickbooks.

Has anyone else experience an issue with transactions being skipped when importing .OFX files?

Transaction skipped on .OFX file import

Hi rodsh,

Thanks for posting in the Community!

Let's perform some basic troubleshooting steps to isolate the situation encountered when importing .OFX bank files to QuickBooks Online. I recommend doing the following below to isolate the unexpected behavior encountered.

  • Edit the OFX file and put only the skipped transactions
  • Save the OFX file to a new sheet.
  • Re-import them to QuickBooks Online Banking page

You can also refer to this link to learn more about Common errors for importing bank transactions using CSV.

Feel free to post again in the Community if you have more questions. I'll be around to help you!

Transaction skipped on .OFX file import

I have done as you suggested and editing the .OFX file to only include the one transaction that is being skipped and yes, it is still being skipped. Will Quickbooks support actually do something about it now?

I would like to share the .OFX file but not attach it here in a public forum as it contains my bank account details.

Transaction skipped on .OFX file import

@Bryan_M I tried contacting support initial but they just blamed the bank that exports the .OFX file rather than bothering to troubleshoot it further. Is it really worth doing again and expecting a different result? Here is the case number from the previous support contact: Case:1594079839

Thanks for getting back, rodsh.

I know that importing transactions is an important option especially for accounts that do not support bank feeds. While I can't check your file and determine from here the root cause of the skipped transaction when trying to import it in OFX format, I'd recommend to import the transaction via CSV file or enter it manually in QuickBooks Online. Furthermore, you can contact our support team to check your file and troubleshoot further.

Feel free to post again if you have any other questions with importing your bank transaction. I'm here to help.

Transaction skipped on .OFX file import

Hi rodsh,

I found that my OFX. file skipped transactions when there were two transactions on the same date with the same amount. My fix was to change the <FITID> property so that they were not identical, which fixed my issue. This is not a long-term fix, but at least everything is reconciled.

Hope this helps!
