Quick books security challenges are over the top now. Seriously, is this really necessary?

I just now had to click through about 10 pages of google challenges. And then I have to have a 2FA code emailed to me. These emails or texts are never quick either, they take at least a minute or two to show up. Seriously QB, is this level of security really what users want or even need? Yes I get 2FA and fully support it. I even kind of see the value of google challenges but seriously, having to do 10 of those in a row when I was careful to get them correct. That is just over the top.

And what's more your chat bot just placed this question into the wrong area in the forums. You guys seem to need to look seriously into your automation. It's not working for us, your clients.

Hi KarlInOz,

I'm sorry for the experience you've been having. I will pass on your feedback regarding the Automation settings in the Community Q&A page.

With regards to the 2FA steps, it may also be worth checking if you're browser is set to include these extra steps.

QuickBooks multi-factor authentication will include an SMS, Email or phone code as well as security questions, if required.

You are able to configure the settings via your Intuit Account.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Rebecca

Quick books security challenges are over the top now. Seriously, is this really necessary?

Hi Rebecca,

Thank you for responding quickly.

Interestingly, when I got to the account setup page, as you suggested, it seems I have MFA turned off:

But I am still being hassled by these huge number of google authenticate challenges. And in this setting there is no option to turn that off even. I would be happy to just use text messages if they would come through quickly. But they take ages to arrive. I want to do my accounting work now, not wait minutes to be able to log in. Every other service I use with MFA/2FA sends a challenge code through within seconds of me requesting it.

So, my two beefs are:

  1. the high number of google authenticator challenges to get to the next hurdle of getting a text message or email sent with a code and
  2. the time taken for the text message or email with the code to arrive. I have tried both the text message and the email option. They both take as long as each other to arrive.

Also, in the options, as shown in the picture above, even though I don't have 2FA turned on I am still being challenged, and there is no option to turn off the google challenges.

Thanks KarlInOz,

With the SMS codes, I can have the team look at why there is a delay. If you add the area code +61 to the front of your phone number these may come through faster as the bank end system is US based.

I've looked into the Google Challenges and these are not set up on our end as a part of the 2FA process so if you're using Chrome to log in, I have found these steps to review.

If you are logging in via a Google Account or have this saved to your browser it may be impacting the login process.

Please let me know how you go.

Thanks,

Rebecca

Quick books security challenges are over the top now. Seriously, is this really necessary?

Thank you for the tip on the Google challenge Rebecca, it prompted me to look at my browser settings, it turns out my privacy settings seemed to be triggering the google challenges.

However, I am mystified as to why I am being given a 2FA challenge when my settings indicate it is turned off.

Ok so I did a couple of things;

  • I checked the mobile number saved for my account. It had a 04 prefix so I changed that and took off the 0
  • I turned on 2 step verification.

This time when I logged in the text message came through within seconds. So, if that keeps up then my problem is sloved.
