When I add a transaction in QuickBooks Self-Employed it does not give me the option to set the Type to Personal. The transaction is created as type 'Business' and I'm unable to change it i.e. the field is greyed out.
If I create a transaction by uploading a receipt (PDF, image etc) I'm able to set the type to Business, Personal or split it across both.
Is it possible to create a transaction, using the 'Add Transaction' function and set the type to 'Personal' ?
Yes, it’s possible, Jen. This is a newly added feature.
All you want to do is enable the Personal Categories option in the Labs section. Then, you’ll have an option to tag a transaction as Personal when you add one.
After the setup, you can start adding personal transactions and tag them that way, like in the screenshot below.
If you need more help about categorising your entries, please don't hesitate to reply on this thread. I'll be happy to assist you further.
Good to see you here in the Community, @Jodie5.
LAB's icon in QuickBooks Online (QBO) is always showing even though you are in a 30-day trial. To get rid of this problem, let's perform a few browser troubleshooting solutions to get the missing function back in QBO.
You can open a private or incognito window and use it to access QBO. Sometimes cache stored up in the system can cause the product to misbehave. Check out these keyboard shortcuts:
Ctrl + Shift + P (Internet Explorer)
Command + Shift + N (Safari)
Ctrl+ Shift + N (Google Chrome)
Ctrl + Shift + P (Mozilla Firefox)
If it's now available, go back to your default browser and initiate a clear cache to fix the unusual behavior. Here’s an article to help with the process: Delete browser cache and temporary Internet files.
Otherwise, using another supported browser can be a good alternative too.
Keep in touch if there's anything I can help you with. I'm always around to provide further assistance.
I am currently using the 30 day trial and would like to add personal transactions but can't see the LABS icon to click, is this because I'm using trial ? Thanks
Hi Jodie5,
There's no need for you to cancel your account and do the trial for QuickBooks Online (QBO) to sign in to your QuickBooks Self Employed (QBSE) account. Let me provide you a few information about this.
Please make sure to log in using this link for your QBSE account.
Once done, you can click the Gear icon so you'll be able to select the Labs option so you can enter your transactions and categorize them as personal.
However, if you're unable to view the Labs option, you can follow the troubleshooting steps above provided by @Michell_B.
I have this article in case you have other questions about QuickBooks Self Employed: QuickBooks Self-Employed Overview.

Is the Labs feature available world-wide? I'm using a trial of QBSE and have tried different browsers, devices and cleared cache, but still don't have access to Labs in the settings menu. All I have under the 'About You' menu is 'Intuit account' and 'Cancel trial'. I need to add past transactions and be able to sort them into business/personal.
Hi Cath88,
If you have followed the steps provided previously on browser troubleshooting, I would recommend you reach out to our QuickBooks Self Employed support team directly so this particular use case can be recorded and they can investigate further. Thanks Lucas. I managed to figure it out. When I clicked the check box for the transaction, the little black menu bar came up with the option to switch it to 'Personal' or 'Business'
