Import QBW to QBO

I currently use an old version of Desktop Pro (NZ 2008/9). I now want to upgrade to QBO.

In the US, UK, and Canada I would do this by installing the latest version of Pro, and then use the export / convert option.

I don't want to use the 'official' data conversion service because it looks like it really doesn't do much, at least not compared to what seems to be available for the US, UK, and Canada.

Unfortunately the US and Canadian versions of Pro recognise that my old QBW file was not created with that country version of software so won't go any further.

So how do I go about this?

Re: Import QBW to QBO

My solution was to export everything I needed to spreadsheets, reformat as required into a suitable format, and then import with Zed Axis.

Data imported:

- Balance Sheet as at 31 March 2017;

- Monthly summary journal for each month April 2017 - March 2018;

- All open invoices transferred as journals (only about 10);

- Monthly summary journal entries by CLASS for each month April 2018 - March 2019, having made adjustments for the open invoices already transferred;

- 13,737 historical time records.

I still have to transfer unbilled expenses; that again will be journal entries imported via Zed Axis.

Re: Import QBW to QBO

Even the free odyssey conversion deal for US. UK, will only will convert from 2012 and newer. We cannot even open a 2008 qbw in 2019 Pro without about 3 or 4 intermediate conversions.

What was the last year of desktop in NZ  And can you find an accountant that still has that version to at least convert to the last known configuration which probably has the ability to directly export to QBO.

Otherwise, other than just keeping the old software for archival purposes you can import chart of accounts and customer lists among others, just not data. But a download from your bank can be uploaded to hey a certain amount of data which you would still have to review one by one.

Re: Import QBW to QBO

File Doctor converts the QBW file to post-2011 format. But there doesn't seem to be a version of Pro available that will allow it to be opened - the US, UK, and Canadian versions all recognise it was not from that country so stop. Seems silly when all I want is the data!

Odyssey's conversion doesn't seem to do a great deal other than export and import lists.

Looks like this will be a thoroughly manual conversion with time data exported to spreadsheet, reformatted as an iif file, and then imported. Fingers crossed that works. Open invoices and bills will probably have to be re-entered, and the rest of last year's data can be entered by a giant journal entry - hopefully again an iif file.

The software is great, but the hassles of conversion are ridiculous.

HI ashelley, can I confirm that you are trying to migrate to Intuit QuickBooks Online (cloud based software), and not a desktop product?

Hi James, that's correct: desktop to online.

Re: Import QBW to QBO

And from 2008 New Zealand to QBO New Zealand.

It will, my guess, take at least two maybe three updates of a 2008 file to whatever the last year of desktop NZ was and then it depends on if that last year of DTNZ has a direct export to online function.

As I dig deeper, after 2012 what @ashelley has was rebranded as Reckon and diverged from QuickBooks - it is entirely possible that this 2008 NZ QuickBooks can never be successfully converted to QBO (but instead to Reckon One)
