Change customer to job in QB Desktop Pro 2020

Hi there WesJD,

It's awesome you've got the 2020 version of QuickBooks Desktop Pro! I hope that it's working for your business needs and helping you master your books. I'm happy to go over customers and jobs with you.

Customers and Jobs, although similar, are two separate profile types in QuickBooks Desktop. Because of that, it's not possible to change a profile from one type to another. In this case, recreating the customer as a job under the desired customer is the way to make sure it's configured the way you need it to be. You can then mark the unwanted customer profile as inactive if you'd like.

Any transactions assigned to that customer can be reassigned to the job once it's created. I recommend doing this before making the customer inactive. You can reassign the transaction simply by opening it, then changing the name in the Customer: Job drop-down menu. Once you've done this, the transaction will be moved to the Job profile.

Here are some articles that can help you with Jobs.

I'm here if you have further questions!

Thanks very much for your response. Just to confirm, I have to adjust the transactions one at a time - there's no way to do a search and replace?

You're very welcome! I'm glad to be of assistance. You're right. At this time, the option is to go one at a time and change the customer: job name on each transaction. You have a great idea though with being able to batch change transactions in this way. I encourage you submit this idea as feedback by going to the Help menu and choosing Send Feedback Online. The Product Suggestion options should be the perfect fit for this situation.

Enjoy the rest of your day!
