Do we need to upgrade to the latest version of QuickBooks every year?

No you do not have to "upgrade" every year - some users are still using the 2007 version!

If you upgrade your computer OS you will eventually find that your old software wont run right any longer.

But you should "update" your existing version every time a new service release is issued.

Mike, do you have to upgrade every year in order to have a payroll subscription?

I dont have QB payroll service - but i think that the 'payroll service fee' includes both the semi-annual tax table update, plus any program upgrade that is issued in the service period. Anyone with payroll pls confirm?

If you have a payroll module, you MUST update to a new version of Quickbooks every THREE YEARS.  In my opinion, this is just a way for Intuit to make more money, but that is the way it is.  If you do not do so, your payroll function will not continue working. 

 

At least with Quickbooks, you can still access your data.  Prior to Quickbooks I had a different software which required you to pony up EVERY YEAR.  They made sure you did so by locking your data.  So, you had to buy the new service access code to unlock it.  Talk about a rip-off!

I just recently upgraded my Payroll Annual Subscription.  It appears my desktop was not upgraded at that time, I am still working on 2019 - I thought everything was included in the upgrade.

I want to make sure you're able to get to work in your version of QuickBooks Desktop since I know keeping on top of payroll is important. I'll help you with sorting this out.

 

When you have a monthly or annual subscription with QuickBooks Desktop, upgrades come free of charge and are sent as soon as the option to upgrade becomes available. Access to QuickBooks Desktop 2020 started in fall 2019, so you would have received an email with new license information and a download link to get started in 2020. If you didn't do that and can't find the email, QuickBooks Desktop support can help you.

 

If you purchased QuickBooks Desktop 2019 outright and have simply added payroll as a service package, the upgrade for QuickBooks Desktop would not have been included because they're two separate things.

 

I recommend contacting QuickBooks Desktop support to figure out what exactly your subscription or purchase information is and learn what steps you can take to be on the version of Desktop you'd like.
