Hello, pswork.
I'm with you and it would be time-consuming to check every workstation to see if it's in single-user mode. Let me help you set your company file to open in Multi-user by default.
There are two ways to open company files in Multiuser mode automatically. The first one is to check the Open file in multi-user mode option. Here's how:
Each time you open the company file from the computer, the multiuser mode will be enabled. You can do this on every workstation.
The second one is to edit the QBWUSER.INI file and then change the MULTIUSERMODE value. Due to the technical nature of this method, you might want to reach out to a computer expert.
Here's how:
There are times when the system reverts the file to the original value. To prevent this:

Hi! We have checked this on all our our computers and they are all set to "Y" to always open in Multiuser and the value is set to "Y" in QBWUSER.INI. We continue to have this issue. This only started after updating to Quickbooks19. We also use QB through Right Network so not sure if that might be a factor as well. Any other ideas?
Thank you!
Hello Silasknox,
I'm glad to hear you've tried the steps that were outlined above regarding the INI file. It's also important to make sure the "Open file in multi-user mode" is checked off when you're opening the company file. The steps were outlined above at the beginning of the response from the previous agent. If you've done all that, the next step is to get in touch with phone support.
They'll be able to take a closer look at these configurations to ensure that everything is set up as it should be so you can open your file in multi-user mode automatically. With tools like a screen share session, they'll be able to see what you're seeing and verify the details. Dial 1-877-772-9158. I bought the online version and it looks like I have to log in to intuit before I get to Quickbooks.
I only have one log in to intuit.

I don't know if things have changed in current versions, but I see no feature that allows me to automatically open in multi user mode when I try to open the company file.
Hi OVWC,
Thanks for joining us here. Welcome! The multi user feature in QuickBooks Desktop simplifies having multiple people logging into one company file. In addition to the wonderful advice provided in the previous posts, you'll need to run the database server manager to ensure the location is properly set up for multi user mode following this guide. Once this has been completed, you'll need to make sure you turn on network discovery and turn off password protected sharing. Here's how;
1. From the Control Panel, select the Network and sharing Centre and then open Change advanced sharing settings
2. Expand the Profile type you're currently using
3. Turn on network discovery
4. Under Password protected sharing, turn off
5. Hit Save changes when finished
Please don't hesitate to contact us if you require additional assistance. It would be our pleasure to work with you directly and ensure your QuickBooks goals are met as soon as possible.
Feel free to reach back out with other questions. We'd be glad to assist!
This method does not work for our company. we have about 8 users and there is no option in "open a company" to select anything related to multi user modes
OVWC - I agree. I also see no option to force users to open QB "only" in multi user mode.
