Does Quickbooks online process American Express?

Hi there, 


Our goal is to make QuickBooks Online as easy and user-friendly as it can be, while allowing you to connect to the bank feed, process online payments, and process the payment for your subscription in a way that's convenient for you. 


You can use an American Express credit card to pay for your subscription, as well as sync to the bank feed. You're unable to accept online payments (via QuickBooks Online Payments) with American Express. When using QuickBooks Online Payments, you're able to accept Visa, MasterCard, Apple Pay, and Discover

Our clients use Amex all the time to pay us over Quickbooks Online Payments. In fact, we just worked with someone today to do it. This is when we invoice people through QBO.  They are sent to a payment portal and enter Amex without issues. This has been working for almost 2 years now.

I had a different client come to this page and incorrectly assume they couldn't pay us with Amex due to this response.

 

Is there a reason why you are saying this isn't supported? Are you referencing a different online payment portal through QBO?


See screenshot where it shows Amex as an accepted option at the bottom. Note that the CC number is an official Amex Corporate test number, and not a valid card number, and no transaction was processed with it.

At this time, QuickBooks Online only supports Discover, Apple Pay, Visa, and MasterCard. We've heard a few reports of some people being able to process Amex through Payments, but generally speaking, this isn't one of our seamlessly supported cards.

It works, KeelAP. I have two clients who regularly pay with AMEX. The only issue I ran into is that one client couldn't get it to work with certain browsers. Chrome seems to work well in my experiences, and my guess is that Intuit doesn't "officially support AMEX" because it doesn't play nice with all browsers.

My invoices show that the only cards are Visa, MasterCard & Discovery. How do you add Amex?

We are using QuickBooks Online and we send invoices out with QuickBooks Payments. They just follow the link, type the AMEX number in, and it accepts it. From there, they type the 4 digit CVV in (although it shows 3 digits) and it takes all four digits.

 

I believe one time they tried to use IE or Edge and it didn't work. Chrome works. 

 

See attached image (if it goes through.) You'll even see the AMEX logo to the right of the number. That is just a corporate AMEX test number being used since we obviously don't want to put a real number in the example.

Thanks for your interest in processing American Express cards for your customers, KeelAP. The QuickBooks Payments team knows this is something that customers would like to see and I'll pass on your feedback about this as well. I don't have any sort of timeline I can give you as to if and when this may be considered.

 

At this time QuickBooks Payments Canada doesn't support Amex. I see you mentioning that you have customers who are able to use Amex, LightShift Video, and we are aware that sometimes these cards do get processed even though they're not supposed to. It's something that's being addressed by our team.

 

Because it's not something that should go through our system, I advise against telling your customers it's available in case it doesn't work. Rather, please stick with the Mastercard, Visa, and Discover card options at this time.

 

For all other credit card processing, feel free to check out the Apps tab to learn what other options are available to process customer payments.

It's always best to check for the flag at the top of the page to see which regional community you're in. I suspect you're right about why it worked for you as QuickBooks Payments US works a bit different than QuickBooks Payments Canada.

This is a Canadian forum.  In Canada, QuickBooks does not accept Amex yet. Correct me please if I am wrong. I'd love to accept Amex using QuickBooks (Canadian Version).

I can definitely clarify this for you as I know how important it is to have a full understanding of the products and services you're using. QuickBooks Online Payments in Canada does not process Amex cards. At this time, it's only Canadian Mastercard, Visa, and Discover credit cards that are accepted through the program. You can also use Apple Pay in conjunction with one of these three cards.

 

We know many customers are eager to be able to process more cards than currently available and I want to assure you the product development team is taking this into consideration. Our goal is always to do what we can to enhance what QuickBooks Online and its related services can do for our customers.

 

I encourage you to submit feedback about this through the Feedback tool in your Quickbooks Online account's Gear icon. It's a great way to share your voice and requests directly with the product development team.

Does Quickbooks online process American Express?

I confirmed in my account that AMEX is one of the supported options in my account but its not processing when I trying to charge for services.  I'm confused on how to make this happen as I don't want to go back and get another method of payment.  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for joining us on this thread. I want to make sure you have the information you need regarding the options for processing credit cards via QuickBooks Payments. I'll help you with this.

 

QuickBooks Payments Canada accepts and processes Visa, Mastercard, and Discover Cards in Canadian funds. Those cards can also be processed via Apple Pay through the Payments system. At this time, we don't have the option to process AMEX cards. You can learn more here: QuickBooks Online Payments overview

 

I took a peek at your Community profile and see you previously were active on a thread in the US QuickBooks Community as well. You're currently commenting in the Canadian Community. If you're a US customer, I recommend getting in touch with the US support team to learn more about why AMEX cards aren't processing in your account.
