Long story short, how do I change an incorrect statement ending balance for an account that has already been reconciled?

Hello peppermill,

When it comes to reconciliations, I know that the opening and ending balances are integral parts of completing that process. QuickBooks Online's reconciliation feature was designed with this in mind, as well as keeping things as simple as possible. I'll gladly go over how this feature works and what your options are for correcting the incorrect ending balance for the already reconciled account.

When reconciling an account in QuickBooks Online, the program will display the difference between what you've checked off and what was entered as the ending balance at the beginning of the process. When you're still working through that reconciliation, you can easily edit that ending balance amount by clicking Edit info.

When you've already completed the reconciliation with an incorrect ending balance, it likely means that whoever saved it prompted QuickBooks to create an adjusting entry to account for the difference. If that's the case and you'd like to go back now to correct that, here's what you can do.

If you have an accountant working with you and they're set up as an accountant user in your QuickBooks, they'll have the option to undo the reconciliation for you so you can correct it. When you don't have an accountant user, there's a way you can manually undo the reconciliation. This article can help: Undo and remove transactions from reconciliations in QuickBooks Online

In both cases, you'll want to make sure the adjusting entry is deleted and then you'll be able to move forward with redoing the reconciliation with the correct numbers. Here's an article you can consider during this as well: Avoid undoing a reconciliation
