How can I start a project without a customer but add a customer later on? I understand you cant change customers mid project

Hello,

It's great that you're looking into using the Projects feature in QuickBooks Online! Projects is a great way to keep track of all your job costs in one place. I'll help explain what's needed in order to create a new project.

You're correct that changing the customer mid-project isn't an option at this time. Since transactions are linked to this customer through the projects tool, changing the customer would mean creating a new project from scratch and deleting the old one.

In order to start a new project, you must select a customer upon setup. The system will need to link the transactions to one of your customers in QuickBooks.

If you're not sure what customer will be involved in the project, I recommend setting up a temporary customer name, such as John Doe, and assigning this customer to your project. Although you're not able to select a new customer part-way through the project, you're able to edit the existing customer's name and information as you go.

Once you know who your customer will be, you can edit the customer's name by clicking the Sales tab > Customers > click on John Doe > Edit > change the Display Name.

I hope this helps get you back on track. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Have a great weekend.
