Can you create a project for a subdivision and then have sub projects withing the subdivision for each lot and house being built?

Hi annette-jacobs,

It's great to see you're planning to use projects to streamline the most complex elements of your books! This advanced feature comes built-in with QuickBooks Online, to simplify the accounting for individual jobs under a parent customer. This is certainly an ambitious way to use the feature, but I'm confident we'll have no problem adapting it to your needs. I'll be happy to help you with this.

When creating a project, you have the option to choose a customer to assign it to. While you won't see any projects in this list, sub-customers can be selected to further categorize your projects on additional levels. Here's a few simple steps describing how I would set this up:

  1. Set up your parent customer as a regular customer.
  2. Head to the Sales tab and select Customers.
  3. Click New customer, and enter the necessary details for the subdivision.
  4. Check the box for Is a sub-customer, and select the appropriate parent.

You'll be able to create projects under this subdivision for powerful categorization. Alternatively, check out these handy articles to learn more about our classes and locations features:
