Acquire, enter, or update EFILE number and password in ProFile

The EFILE and ReFILE services are open for transmissions from February 22, 2021, at 8:30 a.m. (Eastern time), until January 28, 2022, for the electronic filing of your clients' 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 T1 personal income tax and benefit returns. Click here to learn more.

Be sure to update your EFILE password with CRA and follow the steps below to update the password in-product.

Acquire EFILE Number and Password from CRA

This process is undertaken by customers installing ProFile, starting a new tax year, or update an existing EFILE number and password. Note that if any steps are skipped that it will not be possible to EFILE.

ProFile users must apply online to the CRA for an EFILE number and password; information on the application process can be found here.

Following a successful application, the CRA provides a user number and password."

ProFile users can contact the CRA help desk for user number and password assistance at EFILE Helpdesk Support for T1 Returns.

Undertake the following steps after acquiring the EFILE number and password from CRA.

1. Open the ProFile application.

2. Select the "Set EFILE Password" option from the EFILE drop-down menu on the top toolbar:

The EFILE Wizard displays:

3. Click the "Next" button.

4. Enter the EFILE number and password into the fields.

Note: the password is case-sensitive; when entering the password in ProFile ensure that it is exactly as provided:

5. Click the "Next" button.

6. Enter the NetFile Quebec number and access code into the fields:

Note: if a NetFile Quebec number is not required, click the "Next" button to proceed to the next screen.

7. Click the "Next" button.

8. Enter the EFILE number into the field; this is the same number that was entered earlier:

9. Click the "Next" button.

The EFILE setup is complete.

10. Click the "Finish" button; you are returned to the ProFile application.

Confirm correct password via CRA website

Navigate to the CRA's "EFILE for electronic filers" website:

Click the "EFILE Login" button and log in using your EFILE credentials:

Note: if you are unable to log in to the CRA website, it is likely due to an invalid password. The error message may also inform you that the account is locked, or another message. Contact CRA to resolve the issue.

1. Close ProFile.

2. Right-click on the ProFile desktop icon and select the "Run as administrator" option.

3. Select "Options..." from the "EFILE" drop-down menu in the top toolbar.
The "Electronic Filing Options" menu displays.

4. Select the "EFILE Internet" option under the "T1" menu on the left-side.

5. Delete any existing information in the "EFILE On-Line Number" and "EFILE Online Password" fields.

6. Click the "OK" button.

Review Options package (if applicable)

It is necessary to save over the current Options package in order for ProFile to remember that you have removed the password.

If you are not using an Options package, proceed to section "Re-enter EFILE password" below.

1. Select "Options Administration..." from the "Options" drop-down menu in the top toolbar.

The "Options Administration" window displays.

2. Click the "Save" button; the options package is overridden.

3. Click the "OK" button.

Re-enter EFILE password

1. Close ProFile.

2. Right-click on the ProFile desktop icon and select the "Run as administrator" option.

3. Select the "Set EFILE password" option under the "EFILE" drop-down menu in the top toolbar.

The  EFILE wizard displays.

4. Follow the prompts within the EFILE wizard to re-enter the EFILE password.

Note: the EFILE password is case-sensitive and should be entered as provided by the CRA.
