Important Changes to EFILE error messaging

As per CRA requirements, as of the 2010 tax year and on, ProFile has adopted the XML file format for EFILE transmissions to the CRA. While the impact of this change is mostly invisible to users, there are differences in how the CRA handles rejected returns: messages accompanying a rejected return now describe only the general area where the error occurred, rather than a specific field or box.

If the message says errors occurred in the T1 General, there is missing or invalid information in the T1 jacket. Common problem areas include:

  • Taxpayer Social Insurance Number
  • Taxpayer Firstname and Lastname
  • Taxpayer mailing address, including street address, municipality, province and postal code
  • Taxpayer Date of Birth
  • Province of residence at year-end
  • Language of Correspondence
  • Are you a Canadian Citizen? Y/N
  • Pre-Assessment Review Contact Code
  • Post-Assessment Review Contact Code

If the message says errors occurred in Selected Financial Data (SFD), there is missing or invalid information in business or rental statements. Common problem areas include:

  • NAICS Code (Industry code)
  • Start date of Fiscal Period
  • End date of Fiscal Period
  • (T2125 and T2042 forms) Street address and postal code
  • (If the corporation has partners or co-owners) Last name and ownership percentage for each partner
  • (AgriStability/AgriInvest, T1163, and T1273 forms) Province of main farmstead

Tip: The ProFile Active Auditor highlights problems with these fields as you fill out the return. We highly recommend you not send the return to the CRA via EFILE until all errors and warnings have been resolved. To open the Active Auditor, press F9.
