Re: Where do you "mark an employee as exempt from Employment Insurance (or CPP)"?

Hello,

That's a great question. Some employees can be exempt from the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and/or Employment Insurance (EI). With QuickBooks Online Standard and Advanced Payroll services, you can edit your employees profile in a few simple steps. I'll gladly walk you through how you can change the tax exemptions settings.

If you're using QuickBooks Online Standard payroll:

  1. Select Employees from the left menu
  2. Select the employee you wish to edit
  3. Select the edit icon next to Pay
  4. Select the edit icon next to the section #1
  5. Select Tax exemptions
  6. Check the boxes next to Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Employment Insurance (EI)
  7. Select Done twice

If you're using QuickBooks Online Advanced payroll:

  1. Select Employees from the left menu
  2. Select the employee you wish to edit
  3. Select Edit
  4. Select the Taxes tab
  5. Change the toggle button next to Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Employment Insurance (EI) to OFF
  6. Select Save

Feel free to reach out if you need help with anything else.

Thanks WassimO!

I should have added that we have just switched to "online" and are setting up payroll - we are at the screen "need to enter year to date payroll info".  We CANNOT get out of this screen to make the changes you suggested.

If we select Employees, it brings us to the "Get started with payroll / Tell us about your employees" page.  If we insert the current payroll information and put 0.00 for EI and CPP it tells us to mark the employee as exempt.  BUT, I can't get out of this set up loop to get to the page you suggested.

Help please
