Quickbooks help gives two different instructions regarding theT4 Efile Transmitter Number. In one help file under the heading Completing the T4 EFILE window it says:
Enter your magnetic media Transmitter Number. If you are a current magnetic media transmitter, use the MM number that the CRA has already assigned to you. If you are a new transmitter, call the CRA to obtain your number or enter MM 000000.
In another help file under the heading If this is your first time electronically filing tax slips it says:
If you are filing T4, T4A or T5018 slips with the CRA, enter 555555 in the Transmitter Number field. Once they have processed your return, the CRA will send you documentation including the unique EFILE transmitter number you will use in the future.
In my case, this is the first time using Quickbooks in this business to EFILE T4's. However, it was done by my predecessor using Sage 300. But even though she used EFILE for this business in the past, the CRA did not send us our very own transmitter number. So that confuses the issue even more. Which transmitter number is it; MM 000000, or 555555??
I have found out the answer to my own question and thought I'd post just in case it might help someone else.
Quickbooks help file point #1 under the heading If this is your first time electronically filing tax slips which advises using the Transmitter Number 555555 is partially correct. It should be entered as MM 555555 (not sure about the space - if it doesn't work that way then leave out the space).
So the other help file entitled Completing the T4 EFILE window which states to use MM 000000 is NOT correct.
It should also be noted in point #1 referred to above which also states . . .
Once they have processed your return, the CRA will send you documentation including the unique EFILE transmitter number you will use in the future.
. . . is also NOT correct. The CRA will NOT send you a unique transmitter number - you are to use the MM 555555 each year. The only time the CRA will issue a unique transmitter number is if you are a very large organization who transmits many documents each year or at your request. Otherwise, a unique transmitter number is not necessary.
Perhaps Intuit could update both of these help files to reflect accurate information as it pertains to the EFILE of T4's so no one has to go through the confusion that I did. Granted, I did call the CRA and finally get the accurate information, but it would be beneficial to be able to go into the help files and trust that the information contained in them is accurate.
