T4 2020 CRA requirements

I see that Quickbooks has answered a few questions about updating the T4 templates for the new 2020 CRA requirements but I am wondering if that is going to roll out to previous versions if we have not yet updated our Quickbooks version or do we need the latest version in order to receive this update?

T4 2020 CRA requirements

Hi MeredithGivens,

It's vital you're able to create updated T4s so you stay in compliance with the Canada Revenue Agency. Our goal is to provide updated information so you can continue managing your books with ease.

QuickBooks Enterprise is designed to give you endless possibilities when it comes to managing your payroll. At this time, our engineers are working diligently to update the T4 templates according to the CRA requirements and once the update comes out, you can simply use that template on your current version of QuickBooks. To learn more about the T4 requirements, check out this article here. Here's another resource I recommend checking out when you have a minute:Process T4 and Relevé-1 forms in QuickBooks.

Let me know if you have further questions by leaving a comment below. Otherwise, enjoy the rest of your week and feel free to reach out if you need anything. :)

Thanks for the reply. When do you expect Quickbooks to have the new T4 template available? And will this template break out the income for each period as the new requirements show online (SEE BELOW)

  • Code 57: Employment income – March 15 to May 9
  • Code 58: Employment income – May 10 to July 4
  • Code 59: Employment income – July 5 to August 29
  • Code 60: Employment income – August 30 to September 26

Glad to hear back from you. There isn't an exact time-frame of when the new T4 template will be available but rest assured, our engineers are working on implementing the new template while adhering to the CRA requirements as you've described. You can learn more about the updates using this link here from the CRA. Feel free to ask questions.

Has there been any updates as to when Desktop will be able to extract the information and put the wages in the new boxes CRA has implemented for 2020 T4's

This is a good question.  I started processing 2020 T4s yesterday (on Quickbooks Desktop),

and the program is not extracting payroll information for the required periods is not

represented in boxes 57 through 60.

Hello Andrea Heaton and RonBurrows,

I know how much easier bookwork can be when there are fields that auto-populate across your forms, especially T4s during tax season. I'm glad you're seeing the new fields for boxes 57 thru 60 to account for several periods when employees were paid during the pandemic last year. I can go over this with you.

The new fields were added to the T4 forms as a part of the newest tax table release on December 31st. This made sure you have those fields for your T4 remittances, and, at this time, the fields are manual entry. The update wasn't configured to auto-populate the details for those fields, which means reviewing your reports to enter the details manually. Here's an article that may be able to help if you need to customize any reports you're viewing: Customize payroll and employee reports

I know this can create extra work for you and be time consuming, so I urge you to submit feedback to our product development team about how this manual entry will impact you. The comments are forwarded to the product team for consideration so they know how users would like to see QuickBooks Desktop enhanced in future updates. The way to leave feedback is by visiting the Help menu in the program, then selecting Send Feedback Online.

Don't hesitate if you have further questions for me.

Is QB working on the implementation of having the new requirements autofilled?  I just don't want to do all the leg work now and than find out prior to the end of February that QB has captured the info on the T4.

Thanks

Leanne

Hello Leanne,

Thanks for joining this thread. I know that having these fields auto-populated would save you a lot of work. We haven't received any other updates regarding this feature since my colleague's post from earlier today. I recommend following the steps she provided to submit Feedback to our development team so that your concerns can be heard.

If you have any other questions please let me know!

Is there any way to edit T4s when using Quickbooks Online with standard payroll?
We migrated from Desktop to Online in July and input payroll YTD balances for each individual. Therefore when we run T4s Box 57, Box 58, and Box 59 are incorrect. The YTD balance input for July 31 ends up in Box 59 while Box 57 and Box 58 are empty.
How do I go about editing the T4?

Following.  I also need to edit my T4's as I require amounts in Box 40.

I too am following as this would be a great help and I am not a programmer and am an accountant who has clients using both QB and Sage and I have looked on Sage and they have those boxes 57-60 auto populate and I don't think it would be too hard from a programming sense.  I know if our clients have more than a few employees it will take a long time to get all those boxes and manually update them in the T4 on review in QB.

I am also following this post.  I work for an accounting firm and there is lots of work to manually enter all this data.  Every other payroll platform has this auto - populating.  QB is way behind on implementing the necessary software change.  I'm going to put 'feedback' and wait to see if another release is issued before the end of January.  Otherwise, I've got a BIG job ahead of me, which will impact whether I keep my clients on QB payroll for future consideration.

I am also unclear WHERE to adjust the Boxes manually?

To adjust manually when you review the T4's you will see the new boxes at the bottom, if you double click on them it allows you to put an amount in there.

I'm using Quickbooks Online with Standard Payroll module:

I go to Taxes>Payroll Taxes>Annual Forms>Employer Copy of T4 slips>View
At this point it shows me a PDF file that I can download. There are no boxes at the bottom.
Can you tell me how to get to the correct screen to see the boxes at the bottom where I can input the correct balances?

Ah QB online, I haven't looked into that.  For QB desktop you are able to adjust boxes if needed.  I don't know how to adjust QB online T4's.

Hi there!

I love that you're using QuickBooks Online Payroll to pay your employees and stay on top of your payroll taxes. You don't have the ability to edit the the T4 slip with QuickBooks Online Payroll. As indicated, it's a PDF that you can download and doesn't include fields that you can manipulate.

If this is something you'd like to see changed for future use, I suggest you navigate to the Gear icon, then select Feedback to have your voice heard. These messages make their way to our product development team who are responsible for implementing improvements and new features within our products. I'll be sure to pass the message along on my end as well.

I hope you have a great day.

Rebecca, you must be kidding that these new boxes will not auto populate, the CRA announced the new requirements months ago, you would think that your development team would have been on top of this, do they understand how labour intensive it will be to have to manually input that information?

Rebecca R

T4 2020 CRA requirements

I hear what you're saying @not at all happy. The boxes should record any payroll income for each employee that was run in the eligible periods, so the CRA has the numbers to compare to any claims. The amounts will prefill as it's the employment income that's needed in those boxes. However, if a customer didn't sign up for QuickBooks Online Payroll until after March and entered year-to-date information for the eligible periods, the amounts won't populate in the boxes. The amounts only pull through what was actually run using QuickBooks Online Payroll. If you've only entered historical data for the relevant periods, the T4 will need to be manually filled. I encourage you to use the steps I shared above to submit feedback on this as I know that your time is valuable and having to manually enter the amounts takes time away from doing what you love.
