Disconnect a CIBC account from QuickBooks and reconnect a CIBC SmartBanking account

SOLVEDby QuickBooks4Updated January 12, 2024

Before taking action in QuickBooks Online, you'll first need to check that you have a CIBC SmartBankingTM account. To do that, contact CIBC, and go through the steps of the SmartBankingTM application process. Once you have activated your CIBC SmartBankingTM account, you can follow the steps below to disconnect your existing CIBC accounts and reconnect your CIBC SmartBankingTM chequing and savings accounts to QuickBooks Online.

Disconnect the existing CIBC account

If you currently have your CIBC accounts connected to QuickBooks Online, you'll need to disconnect them first before you can integrate with CIBC SmartBankingTM. If you haven't previously connected your CIBC accounts in QuickBooks Online and would like to connect to CIBC SmartBankingTM, you can jump to the next section.

Please note that credit card connections aren't currently accessible through CIBC SmartBankingTM, so you shouldn't disconnect your credit card accounts from QuickBooks Online.

Before disconnecting your chequing and savings accounts from QuickBooks Online, first make sure you take action on any transactions in your For Review tab. Any transactions left in For Review will be removed upon disconnect.

Once you have accepted or excluded all transactions in the For Review tab for each account that you want to reconnect to a SmartBankingTM chequing or savings account, follow these steps to disconnect:

  1. Go to Transactions, then select Bank transactions (Take me there).
  2. Select the account you want to change. Then select the Edit (✏️) icon then Edit account info
  3. In the Account window, select the Disconnect this account on save checkbox.
  4. Select Save and Close.

You'll no longer see this account listed on the Bank transactions (Take me there) tab, but all your existing transactions are still saved in QuickBooks Online.

Reconnect your CIBC SmartBankingTM account

  1. Go to Transactions, then select Bank transactions (Take me there).
  2. Select Add Account.
  3. Search for CIBC SmartBankingTM and select it from the list.
  4. You'll be sent to CIBC bank’s website, where you'll need to log in and follow instructions to give Intuit access to your accounts.
  5. After finishing the process at your bank, you'll be sent back to QuickBooks Online. If you're reconnecting to your previously-connected CIBC account in QuickBooks Online, select Want a shorter time period and choose the 0 days option. This will only bring in transactions moving forward and will prevent bringing in any duplicate transactions into QuickBooks Online.
  6. Choose an account to connect to from the Account type dropdown. If you're reconnecting to your previously-connected CIBC account, select the same QuickBooks Online account that was previously associated with this CIBC account.
  7. Select Connect. This could take up to a few minutes.
  8. After your download finishes, you'll be taken back to the Banking page, where you should see your connected account.
