Resolve an “Enter Payroll Service Key” error message in QuickBooks Desktop

Some QuickBooks Desktop users are encountering an error message asking them to enter a payroll service key when running payroll.
With QuickBooks Desktop 2022 or older versions
If you are on QuickBooks 2022 or older versions, it is necesary to download and install QuickBooks 2023 in order to continue using your payroll service.

With QuickBooks Desktop 2023
- Select the Cancel button to close the window.
- Restart QuickBooks Desktop. This should resolve the issue.
If the issue persists for QuickBooks Desktop 2023
You can resolve this issue by manually synchronizing the license data.
- Select the Help option from the top toolbar menu.
- Select the Manage My License option from the menu, then select Sync License Data Online…:
The license synchronization window displays, and the process begins. The process should only take a few seconds to complete.
- Select OK when prompted to close the synchronization window.
- Close and restart QuickBooks Desktop. This should resolve the issue when running payroll.
