Delete sales tax rates and agencies in QuickBooks Online

by Intuit•11• Updated 2 months ago

While you cannot permanently delete a sales tax rate or tax agency in QuickBooks Online, you can easily deactivate a sales tax rate or rename a tax agency that you no longer need.

Deactivate a sales tax rate

Deactivating a sales tax rate hides it from your active list, ensuring you do not apply it to future transactions by mistake.

  1. Go to All apps A bunch of numbers and letters on a tile wall., select Sales Tax, then select Overview (Take me there).
  2. Select Manage sales tax.
  3. On the Tax agencies tab, locate the tax agency associated with the sales tax rate you wish to make inactive.
  4. Select Make inactive in the Actions column next to the rate you wish to make inactive.
  5. You'll know the sales tax rate has been deactivated when you see Make active in the Actions column for that sales tax rate.

To reactivate the sales tax rate at any time, turn on Show inactive then select Make active in the Actions column.

Rename a tax agency

If you need to update your records, you can edit the name of any custom tax agency you previously created.

  1. Go to All apps A bunch of numbers and letters on a tile wall., select Sales Tax, then select Overview (Take me there).
  2. Select Manage sales tax.
  3. Select Edit agency settings, then edit Tax agency name.
Note: You can edit only custom tax agency created by you.
  4. Select Save.
