Frequently asked questions

Who fills out the TD1?

The TD1 has a series of worksheets to help employees complete the form on their own. A completed TD1 would then need to be provided to the employer so that the employer knows how much to withhold from each paycheque.

Do I have to file the TD1?

Employers do not need to file the TD1. However, the CRA does require employers to keep the TD1 in their records for at least 6 years.

What if I don't have a TD1 for my employee?

Per the CRA guidelines, if you don't receive a completed TD1 from an employee, you still must deduct taxes, allowing the basic personal amount only.
