ProFile users encounter a "DAX Error" message when opening or creating a return

Issue

A small percentage of our customers have been affected by a "DAX Error" when attempting to create a new return, or open an existing one:

DAX Error

The error reads: "Access violation at address [MORE]."

This error occurs when the components that are necessary to enable the module have installed incorrectly or have been improperly registered.

Resolution

Determine what type of installation of ProFile is on the machine:

  • a "Local Installation" means that ProFile is installed directly on the computer
  • a "Workstation Install" means that ProFile is installed on a separate Server Machine and is being run from the computer being used

Right-click on the ProFile icon on the desktop; select the "Properties" option.

If the path displayed in the "Target" field displays a local directory using the "C:" drive (e.g. C:Program FilesProFileprofile.exe) it is a Local Installation:

Local Installation

If the path displayed in the "Target" field displays a mapped drive letter (e.g. M:profileprofile.exe) it is a Workstation Install:

Workstation Install Mapped Drive
If the path displayed in the "Target" field displays a Universal or Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) path drive (e.g. \ServerNameprofile.exe) the DAX error will almost certainly result:
Workstation Install UNC

To correct the path, create a Mapped Drive to the ProFile Installation Folder on the server.

1. Click on the Windows "Start" menu; click on the "Documents" option.

The Windows Explorer displays.

2. Right-click on the computer name in the right-side panel; select the "Map Network Drive" option.

3. Select the drive (e.g. "E:") and the  folder to map; the folder should be the ProFile installation folder location.

4. Click the "Finish" button.

Local Installation troubleshooting steps

The majority of the issues with a Local Installation can be resolved by performing the following steps:

Run "Proreg.exe"

1. Exit ProFile.

2. Right-click on the ProFile desktop icon and select the "Open file location" option.

The Windows Explorer opens.

3. Verify the folder location is C:Program Files (x86)ProFile.

4. Locate the file "proreg.exe" in the folder.

5. Right-click on the "proreg.exe" file and select the "Run as administrator" option.

The "ProFile Module Registration" window displays.

6. Click on the "Clear all" button; the "X" in the boxes clear.

Note: it may take several minutes for the boxes to clear.

If prompted with a message regarding "UAC", allow the access. This prompt is occasionally generated because of high security settings for "User Account Control" (UAC) permissions. If not prompted, continue to the next step below.

7. Click the "Register all" button; the "X" in the boxes repopulates.

Note: it may take several minutes for the boxes to repopulate.

8. Locate the entry "gpshell.dll" from the list of boxes.

9. Uncheck the "gpshell.dll" box.

10 .Close the "ProFile Module Registration" window.

Review the related article for full instructions on running proreg.
