Can I set up classes when importing data from excel to Quickbooks? I have classes set up in my QuickBooks but there is not an option to use when importing?

Hello agalloway,

Welcome to the QuickBooks community! It's a great place to find answers to questions such as yours. I'll help you with this one.

Having the ability to import transactions into QuickBooks Online is one of our newer features and includes the ability to import invoices and import bills. As a part of the process, you map the different fields from Excel to enter the transaction into QuickBooks. At this time, class isn't one of the fields that can be mapped. Adding it to the transaction or the individual line items after import will ensure that your transactions track class as you'd like them to.

Feel free to leave comments about this for our product development team through the Feedback feature accessed in the Gear icon in the upper right of your account.

I'm here if you have further questions. Have a wonderful day!

Is there any time frame for this field to be added to our import options? I have thousands of invoices to import. Opening each of them individually is as bad as entering each invoice manually. If QBO allows me to create my own invoice template, they should allow for each line item to be imported. These four fields are not importing for me: Class, Address, Client Name, Billing Instructions. Additionally, when will QBO start amping up the services for businesses that have commissioned staff? Having them as a CLASS is silly. It makes running a salesperson commission report impossible. I still have to use my old way of accounting to do my commissions every week.

Hello jbirston,

Our goal at QuickBooks is to provide a software that keeps things simple for you and helps speed up the accounting process. I can see how having the fields you mentioned available for import would help with this process, as well as handling salesperson commission tracking in the program.

I don't have a time frame that I can share for when these kinds of things might be implemented in the software. Rest assured that QuickBooks Online is ever evolving to keep up with business needs. Feedback from users like you helps us know what changes are important to you. I encourage you to submit feedback using the steps I gave in my original response, or you can check out this article which also outlines the steps: How do I submit feedback?

I hope you enjoy your weekend.

Doesn't that seem really strange? That another company can import columns like "Classes" into Quickbooks Online,  but QBO cannot do it? Laura can you put me in touch with one of the developers? Is this possible?

Hey there,

Giving choice is important to us and we do our best to implement as much into the program as possible. We offer a lot of functionality with third party apps to help give you the options you want. To contact our developers you can submit feedback online by following these steps:

1. Select the Gear icon at the top, then Feedback.
2. Enter your comments or product suggestions then select Next.
3. You'll be provided a list of suggested Help articles related to your comment. You can read through them or select Skip and send message.
4. From the drop-down, choose the appropriate category, then select Send message.

Hope this helps.

this third party app is 170+/- dollars. If your company allows me to place a field in my invoice, it is because for my business, I need it. I upgraded my package with QBO to include "Classes" as it is the only way to track commissioned sales staff. So on top of my upgrade I now have to purchase a third party app to import thousands of invoices? This makes no sense. I am not trying to be a jerk, but honestly! How frustrating these answers are! We all know from other apps that "wish lists" take forever to implement in programs. If the field is in the invoice, I should be able to map it.

Wishing I had gone with different software right now.

Hello again,

We know every dollar counts when running a business as well as finding a software that best suits your needs. I'd suggest looking through the App page in product by going to the left menu bar and selecting Apps. You'll want to search for sync data to find a selection of Apps that are available to assist with the importing of your data.

I do suggest sending feedback when in QuickBooks using the gear icon at the top.

Have a great night.
