How to enter HST tax installment payment?

It’s a great practice to stay on top of your tax installments, and I can help you get that payment recorded correctly. In the Canadian version of QuickBooks Desktop, recording an installment is a bit different than paying a regular tax return because it’s a prepayment.

Using the Sales Tax menu is the best way to do this. It links your payment to the Receiver General so your reports stay accurate. Here is how you can record that installment:

  1. Go to the top menu and select Sales Tax, then choose Pay Sales Tax or File Sales Tax.
  2. Select the bank account you're using and set the Check Date.
  3. Find the tax agency in the list.
  4. Click the Applied column next to the correct tax period.
  5. Manually type in the installment amount you paid.
  6. Click OK or Print & Pay.

If you want to double-check your work, you can run a Sales Tax Liability report. You’ll see the installment listed as a payment, which lowers the total tax you owe for that period.

Recording it this way keeps your books organized and makes sure that when you file your year-end return, QuickBooks Desktop knows exactly what you’ve already paid. This prevents any double-payments and keeps your records ready for tax season.
