Hi there, Arlene.

Yes, you can transfer your QuickBooks Desktop files to QuickBooks Online. I'll walk you through the process.

To begin, transfer or copy your QuickBooks desktop company file from the USB drive to your computer. Since you no longer have QuickBooks Desktop installed, you will need to download and reinstall it to access and prepare your file for migration. You can use the QuickBooks Desktop trial version for this purpose.

Here’s how to export your company file:

  1. Sign in as an admin in QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Export your company file:
    • Go to Company > Export Your Company File to QuickBooks Online for Pro and Premier.
    • For Enterprise, press CTRL + 1 to open the Product Information window, then CTRL + B + Q and select OK.
  3. Click Get Started and choose whether to bring all your company data or just lists and balances.
  4. If you have inventory, decide whether to track it using FIFO.
  5. Select your home currency if you're using multi-currency in your QuickBooks Desktop.
  6. Indicate if you have a QuickBooks Online account:
    • If yes, sign in and select Continue.
    • If no, choose to create an account (this will set up a trial company).
  7. Sign in with your QuickBooks Online credentials.
  8. Choose the company you want to move your data to and click Continue.
  9. Click Export and confirm replacing existing data if prompted.

When switching, you'll learn which features and data move and which do not.

Please note that you have only 60 days to migrate your data from the time you create your QuickBooks Online account. The time needed to move your data to QBO varies depending on the size of your company file. Make sure to keep QuickBooks Desktop running until the move is done.
