If I delete a Tag Group, are the Tags that are in the group deleted as well?

Hello LaterWhen,

I love that you're making use of our new Tags feature in QuickBooks Online! This is an awesome way to keep your books organized and I know you'll love this new functionality. When it comes to deleting tag groups, I can definitely set things straight.

If you use the Action column to select Delete group, you should get a notification that reads as follows: "Tags in this group will still be available, but they'll be ungrouped." Once you hit Delete, the tags that were within the group you had created will be listed individually under Tags and Tag Groups. You're welcome to assign these tags to a new group by using the option to Edit tag within the Action column. Just use the Group dropdown menu to select the group you'd like to add them to, and remember to Save your changes.

Since tagging is still a new feature, I thought I'd share a few articles that go over the ins and outs. This should make the feature more straightforward and maybe even allow you to use it in more ways than you thought possible.

Let me know if there's anything else you need help with. It's what I'm here for!

Thank you.  I was afraid to click the delete button so I didn't see the message.  FYI, I need to do this because I didn't realize that only one tag per group was allowed.  I grouped a couple of tags based on type, eg Donations, but I need to choose more than one of this type.  eg In-Kind Donation and Receipted Donation  The limitation means I will not be able to group these two tags.

That totally makes sense! It's better to check in than to make an irreversible change that will cost you your valuable time. I was playing around with this new feature in my test account and I was able to add multiple tags to one tag group. For example, I can use the New button to create a new tag group and call it Donations. I can add a tag called In Kind Donations, then add another called Receipted Donations. Is this what you mean? Or are you trying to add one tag to multiple tag groups? If you want to expand I'd be happy to clarify if what you're trying to do is possible.

One can add multiple tags to a Tag Group of course.  And you can add multiple Tags to a transaction, but you CANNOT add more than "one tag per group" to a transaction.  I created a tag called In-Kind Donation, and a tag called, Receipted Donation.  I thought it would keep things organized if I group them together in a Tag Group called Donation Data.  But then I discovered that I was unable to add both tags to a donation transaction because they are both in the same group.  If they are ungrouped, I am able add both tags to the transaction.  I guess I am not interpreting the purpose of Tag Groups in the same way as the software developers did. I suspect that it has to do with running a "Tag Group" report - if the report were segmented by Tag, then some transactions would be repeated and the total for the Tag Group would be wrong.

I hear what you're saying now @LaterWhen.

You're correct in what you're saying but I understand how adding multiple tags within one group to a transaction would be helpful. Since this feature is still new, our product development team would be eager to hear your feedback so that they can ensure that it's meeting the needs of our customers as well as it can. If you're interested in sharing your thoughts on this, you can navigate to the Gear icon, then select Feedback. I'm going to pass your ideas along to my team as well.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do to support you, and have a great day!
