Why does cpp not get deducted every paycheque?

Hello iritc,

Having a full sense of what's happening with payroll, including deductions, is essential for making sure your employees are being paid correctly and your remittances to the government are correct. I'll get you started with figuring this out.

In these situations, there are a few things to consider: has this employee reached their CPP cap, are they being paid enough to have CPP deducted, and have you adjusted the employee's birth date?

The CPP cap is determined by the CRA. Since QuickBooks Online uses tax tables drawn from the CRA website, the payroll system automatically knows when to stop deducting those amounts from employee pay cheques if they've reached those thresholds. I encourage you to review the following CRA article to learn more:  CPP contribution rates, maximums and exemptions

The next item to consider is whether your employee is making enough to have taxes taken off their pay cheque. For instance, if you have an employee whose pay cheque fluctuates, it could be that one pay period they did make enough, but the next they didn't. Read the Employers' Guide - Payroll Deductions and Remittances article from the CRA website to gain more insight into this.

Lastly, double check that the birth date entered on the employee profile is correct and that they're old enough to be seeing these kinds of deductions.

If everything looks fine and you're still feeling unsure, reach out to our support teams for guidance. An agent will be able to take a closer look at your setup and numbers with you to work out what's going on. Here's how to get in touch.
