Request sales tax exemption and refund

Learn how to exempt your company from sales tax and get refunded.



Apply for sales tax exemption

If your company is exempt from sales tax, contact and send us a copy of your Certificate of residency. This allows Intuit to update your account as Sales Tax Exempt, and get you refunded of the sales tax Intuit charged you from any services or product orders.

For refund request, here’s what you need to provide along with the documentation:

  • Account information such as Customer Account Number (CAN) and Business Number (BN).
  • Order number if available
  • Product or service you purchased


What happens after sending the required documents?

  • Account status will be updated to Sales Tax Exempt. Account updates may take 5 to 10 business days.
  • Once your account is updated to Sales Tax Exempt, you will no longer see sales tax charges on future orders or service fees.
  • Refund requests for Sales Tax Exemption on products or services you purchased from Intuit can only be processed after we receive and validate a copy of your Tax-Exempt Certificate. We are limited on how far back we can refund sales tax.
  • Refund requests may take some time, depending on your mode of payment and how soon your financial institution is able to post the transaction.

  • Some certificates of residency expire. Once they do, resubmit a new certificate every expiration period to avoid being billed for sales tax.

Certificate of residency

If a corporation or organization is exempt from income tax and wants its tax-exempt status noted on a certificate of residency then it must:

  • Ask for its tax-exempt status to be referenced on the certificate.
  • Indicate the tax year(s) the certification of tax-exempt status is for.
  • Indicate the specific legal provision that creates its tax exempt status (for example, a pension corporation described in paragraph 149(1)(o.1) or a crown corporation described in paragraph 149(1)(d) of the Income Tax Act should reference the relevant paragraph).
  • Provide the CRA registration number of any relevant plan.
