Hi Janel

I recently had this issue as well.  In order to do so, open the bill and delete the line referencing the product that has the wrong account association, then recreate the line linking the product.  The account is only associated at post-time so historical entries do not get changed when you update an existing product.

Hope this helps!

Hi janelconsulting,

QuickBooks Community is a great place to get answers to your questions, and we're always happy to see new members. QuickBooks Online makes it easy to complete these changes. I'll guide you through the process.

When you change the product item's account it gives you the option to update the historical transactions. I've included a picture below for reference. If the box that's circled in red was checked then the transactions were automatically updated for you.

In the case that it wasn't, LeithG is correct, and you'll have to edit the product in the transaction. I've laid out the steps for you:

  1. Go to the Gear Icon.
  2. If it's an invoice, choose Sales/Invoicing; if it's a bill/expense, choose Expenses.
  3. For invoices, choose the Invoice Tab; choose the Expense tab for a bill/expense.
  4. Find the transaction you want to change. Click Edit from the right-hand column.
  5. Recreate the item line and delete the line with the wrong account by clicking on the garbage can icon.
  6. Click Save and Close.

I'm confident that you'll have this accomplished in no time. You can always reach back out here in the QuickBooks Community if you have other questions. Have a great day!
