How does one export GIFI (General Index of Financial Information) from QBO?

Hi there, accounting96.

Here's how to export GIFI (General Index of Financial Information) from QBO.

  1. Go to the WorkPapers section for your client's books.
  2. Check the GIFI Mapping and the Working Trial Balance to make sure that all the work is completed.
Any unassigned codes can be done under the GIFI mapping section.
  3. Go through the list and select Assign GIFI Codes to assign codes.
  4. When you see a row that'll appear beneath the line you wish to map, select the GIFI code from the list.
  5. Select Save GIFI code.
  6. Open ProFile and create a return or open the return you want to import the GIFI codes.
  7. Go to the File menu, then choose QBOA Import.
  8. Select OK.

The export is completed after hitting OK.

How does one export GIFI (General Index of Financial Information) from QBO?

There doesn't seem to be this ability with Quickbooks Self Employed. Does anyone have a workaround?

Hi DCoach,

You're right that QuickBooks Self-Employed doesn't allow you to export GIFI files. There may be a potential workaround available for you depending on what you're trying to accomplish.

I'd recommend reaching out to the QuickBooks Self-Employed team directly by sending them a message using the Chat feature in your app. You can also contact them via email by filling out this form: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_CA/contact. This team specializes in the Self-Employed version of QuickBooks, and they'll have more insight they can offer you in terms of possible solutions.

Let me know if you learn anything interesting. I'd love updates to make sure you got the support you needed.

Have a great day!

How does one export GIFI (General Index of Financial Information) from QBO?

After having talked with the folks at Quickbooks online, the only option is for an Accountant to pull it via the Accountant version of QuickBooks online. This is very discouraging as someone used to be able to at least get the proper reports in order to generate the GIFI manually if needed, but those reporting options seem to have disappeared. Also not sure why they wouldn't allow a business owner who files him/herself and doesn't have thousands of dollars to pay accountants to pull that information. This makes QuickBooks a useless application as the use of QB for 99% of the people is to account so that at the year-end tax filings can be simpler.

So you're essentially contradicting the whole idea of using Quickbooks and Turbotax and saying I cannot use this software without having an accountant.  The reason I signed up for Quickbooks online is to do it myself and avoid the fees of accountant.  Since I cannot export to GIFI from Quickbooks, what is the points of entering the data into Quickbooks if you cannot use it to prepare your tax return..... sorry, very very disappointed... I will be looking for other software alternatives

How does one export GIFI (General Index of Financial Information) from QBO?

Hello there,

Thanks for joining the thread and providing your feedback about exporting GIFI files from QuickBooks Online.

As I said in one of my comments above, I know that accountants are an investment and can be costly. QuickBooks Online is designed to be user-friendly and straightforward, meaning you're certainly able to run your business without the help of an accountant. Certain features, however, require partnership from accounting professionals. QuickBooks Online ProAdvisors use Accountant subscriptions, which they can link up with your account. They have different features available to them, such as the "Undo Reconciliation" feature, and the ability to export GIFI files.

Although regular user accounts aren't able to export GIFI files directly from QBO, most of the data in your account can be exported to Excel. QuickBooks helps keep tax time stress-free by providing numerous reports, and tax return filing options that are made to make your life easier.

I know at the end of the day you'll have to make the right decision for you and your business, but I'd sure hate to see you go. Our team is standing by to help you accomplish your goals. Please don't hesitate to reach out to our technical support team at 855-253-1536 from Monday-Friday 9am-8pm EST, and Saturdays 9am-6:30pm EST.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

Cheers.

Has anything been done to allow regular business users to get reports by the GIFI codes so that we can do our tax returns????  THIS FUNCTIONALITY SHOULD BE AVAILABLE ASAP!

Can we at least get a chart mapping the QBO accounts to the GIFI codes, PLEASE.

I would really like to be able to use GIFI files in the regular version. It is really irritating that I am doing all the work in  QBO and then I have to as pay an accountant to get the GIFI files

Hi VJDS. Thanks for your feedback about the GIFI file option. I know how important it is to be able to access certain features such as this, and I can see how having to connect with an accountant to access it may not be the right decision for your business. I'll pass along your thoughts to my team.

I'd encourage you to submit feedback about this as well by clicking the Gear icon > Feedback. Our product development team reads these messages daily, and we're always looking for ways to improve the product.

Cheers.
