How can I add a fuel surcharge to invoice totals as a % similar to a tax?

Hi there,

You've reached the right place for help. I'd be happy to answer your question.

At this time, QBO doesn't have an option to add an additional charge as a percentage, but you can add the fuel surcharge as a line item on your invoice. This means you'd have to manually calculate the fuel surcharge from a percentage to a dollar value amount that you can add as a line item. Let me know if you've got further questions. I'm here to help.

@murray1

Yes it but it requires a work around

Create the service item named for the surcharge and select the income account it posts to on the item screen.  Set the rate to the decimal percent for the surcharge, ie 25% = 0.25

On the invoice, enter the amount as the qty

ie if the sub total of the invoice is $2,569.32, then enter 2569.32 as the qty

Hi there drakefrix123,

Making sure your transactions are properly entered in QuickBooks Online is an important step to make sure that your books are balanced. I can provide some insight.

Quickbooks Online isn't able to make a calculation for a surcharge on the entire invoice based on a percentage. Rustler's idea to add it as a line item with the Rate being the percentage you want and add the amount of the invoice in the Amount. If you'd like this to be added as a feature to QuickBooks Online in the future, you can leave feedback by navigating to the Gear icon, then Feedback. The comments in this section are considered by the developers when creating new features for QuickBooks Online.

Yes this needs to happen ASAP, with the current fuel prices. There needs to be a toggle switch that I can turn on a fuel surcharge on all memorized invoices and then as fuel prices go down I can toggle the switch off and it removes it from all memorized invoices. We are a service based business that bills clients the same amount each month but fuel is killing us. Come on QuickBooks, add this feature ASAP!

I agree with this 100%!  Service based businesses that depend on fuel to operate need this option NOW!  Can this escalate?
