When generating an invoice, how do I apply a different sales tax for an out-of-province customer? I'm an Ontario business that needs to apply sales tax for a BC customer.

Adding different sales tax rates for your out-of-province customers is made simple in QuickBooks Online! You can create custom tax codes using unique rates, and label them so you know which province they're for. I'd be happy to point you in the right direction for how to add a custom tax in QBO.

 

Follow the steps listed in this article to see how to add your BC tax rate: How to set up a new sales tax code. As explained in the article, you'll have the option to select Provincial, Group, or Custom taxes. You can also add new tax agencies if you need to send off year-end tax forms to different agencies like the CRA or Revenu Quebec. 

 

Once your new BC tax is set up, you can select it from the drop-down menu on your invoice.
