Hi there, @anneversteeg342. I can share with you some insights about recording invoices in QuickBooks Online (QBO) using the standard template.
Once you've added the account summary or the total amount and balance due to your invoices from your Custom Form Styles, the Subtotal, tax amount (GST/HST), Total, Total of new charges, and Balance Due will be added to your transaction. The payment amount will only show up when a payment is applied to the existing invoice.
I'm adding these screenshots for your visual references.
For additional resources, while customizing your form templates in QBO, check out this article: Customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online.
Additionally, you can get more tips while working with your invoices and other customer entries from here: Topics about your company's income and customers.
if you have any other questions about your invoice entries, let me know by adding a comment below. I'm more than happy to help. Have a good one!
Thank you @Angelyn_T especially for the visual images. I have looked at your references and understand the Standard Invoice. I have created an invoice as per the instructions, but the payment field does not show (when I do it in the standard invoice it does). How can I get the payment to show? I added a pdf of the created invoice.

Once you've created the invoice for your customer, you'll hit 'Receive Payment' to record either a partial or full payment toward the invoice. Once you've recorded the amount, you'll see the Amount received and the remaining Balance due for the associated invoice.
