There is no "Default Tax Rate" selection when I go to Advanced>Accounting...?  It only gives me the option to change my fiscal year or to change my Accounting Method...?

Hi CindyB1,

Let's take a closer look at what's going on. Do you already have Sales Tax turned on in QuickBooks? If not, that's why you're not seeing the option for setting the default to Inclusive of Tax in the advanced settings. Exit out of the company settings and follow these steps. Simply head over to the Taxes tab in the left menu and then click the button to start tracking sales tax.

If you are already tracking sales tax and still not seeing that option, try clearing your browser's cache and cookies to make sure there isn't anything preventing that option from appearing. Read this article about how to clear cache and cookies to learn how to do that.

Re: Hi Warren. Yes, you can make 'inclusive of tax' the defau...

Thanks for this discussion. I am using QuickBooks Desktop Pro US version. Can you have tax inclusive amounts on the invoice - and yet show the tax below and have it go to the right tax liability account?

Thanks for this discussion.

Is it possible - using QuickBooks Pro Desktop US Version - to have tax inclusive amounts on the invoice - and still show the sales tax below and have it go to the correct sales tax liability account?

Thanks, Ruth

Hello there, Ruth.

In QuickBooks Desktop US version, you only have two options. When do you owe sales tax and When do you pay sales tax. Since, you wanted to have a tax inclusive amount, you'll have to manually enter the amount deducted by the tax.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Edit menu, then select Preferences.
  2. Click Sales Tax on the left panel.
  3. Go to Company Preferences.
  4. On the Do you Charge sales tax?, select Yes.
  5. Click Add sales tax item.
  6. On the New item window, click the TYPE drop-down.
  7. Then, select Sales Tax Item.
  8. Enter your Sales Tax Name, Tax Rate, and Tax Agency.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Fill-in when do you owe and pay sales tax.
  11. Then, click OK.

After setting up your Sales Tax, create an invoice.

  1. On the Invoice page, choose your customer.
  2. Under the ITEM CODE, select New.
  3. Fill-out the necessary information, including the Price, the Tax Code, and the Account.
  4. Then, OK.
  5. Enter the Amount.
For example my expected amount for this invoice is 10.00 and my tax rate is 2%. I will enter 9.8 as the amount, so that my expected amount will be the total amount of my invoice.
  6. On the TAX column, select Tax
  7. Then, Save & Close.
