How do I set up sales for a yard care company when the price varies based on the size of the yard and services required?

Hi there,

Running a yard care company sounds like a ton of fun! QuickBooks Online can help you organize your sales by allowing you to set up products and services at different costs. I'd be happy to help explain a few options for structuring your service fees.

When you set up a product/service, you have the option to either enter a default cost, or to simply leave this field blank. If you're going to be charging different rates based on the size of the lawn, you may choose to leave the cost field blank, and enter the cost when you create your invoice or estimate.

Another option is to set up different products/services for each standard lot size, with their corresponding prices. For example, you may have the following prices for your services:

  • Yard Care - size 10x10 = $100
  • Yard Care - size 20x20 = $200
  • Yard Care - size 40x40 = $500

Since the services needed will vary from job to job, I recommend leaving the cost field blank and simply entering the appropriate prices based on the project at hand. The Projects feature may be helpful for you in this instance, as you're able to group job costs all in one place in order to stay organized. Here's more information about Projects: Projects FAQ

I'd also recommend taking a look at these articles which may help guide you through the setup process:

I suggest getting in touch with your accountant, too. They'll be able to advise you on the best method to structure your books based on your business. If you're not already connected to an accountant, you can find one in your area here: Find an Accountant

If you have any other questions, let me know.

Have a great day!
