I am trying to claim the amount for depended children on the spouse's income tax return. the kids are her kids from another spouse, She got remarried in 2019 and the kids are going on his sk428 but she wants them on her return as they are her kids and not his. I am trying to change were they are being claimed but have to override the fields, Is there a better way of doing this in the return.
Hi, thank you for using Intuit Profile Community
Toggle to the dependant screen on the return for the person you want to claim eligible dependant, then click yes for "claim as eligible dependant". This will move the claim, both federal and provincial, to that spouse. Confirm the question is answered no on the other spouse. I tested and this works for me.
Note: ProFile issues a warning for the eligible dependant claim in the year of marriage, but, please confirm eligibility for the claim based on the CRA rules for the claim.
Hope this helps
CRA eligible dependant reference
if she got married in 2019 then 2020 is NOT THE YEAR OF MARRIAGE for the eligible dependent rule !
