Delete a sales tax code in QuickBooks Online

SOLVEDby QuickBooks7Updated January 29, 2024

Making a sales tax rate inactive in QuickBooks Online is easy. Doing this hides the rates from the tax selection menu on all transactions.

Tip: Sales tax rates created automatically by adding a new province to your file can't be deactivated.

To ensure data integrity, it's not possible to delete a sales tax rate completely.

Make a sales tax code inactive

  1. Go to Taxes.
  2. Select Sales tax (Take me there) at the top. (Tip: If you use payroll in QuickBooks Online, you may need to select Sales Tax as opposed to Payroll Tax)
  3. Select Manage sales tax.
  4. On the Tax agencies tab, locate the tax agency associated with the sales tax rate you wish to make inactive.
  5. Select Make inactive in the Actions column next to the rate you wish to make inactive.
  6. You'll know the sales tax rate has been deactivated when you see Make active in the Actions column for that sales tax rate.

Reactivate an inactive sales tax rate

  1. Go to Taxes.
  2. Select Sales tax (Take me there) at the top. (Tip: If you use payroll in QuickBooks Online, you may need to select Sales Tax as opposed to Payroll Tax)
  3. Select Manage sales tax.
  4. On the Tax agencies tab, locate the tax agency associated with the sales tax rate you wish to reactivate.
  5. Select Make active.
  6. You'll know the sales tax rate has been reactivated when you see Make inactive in the Actions column for that sales tax rate.
