How do I set a custom tax year

Hello jerad,

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community! I love that you're using or considering QuickBooks Self-Employed for managing your books. It's an easy-to-use tool to make sure you're keeping on top of your income and expenses, as well as taxes and mileage. I can go over the sales tax setup in this version of QuickBooks.

Due to its simplified layout and usability, customization option such as setting a custom tax year aren't available at this time. Instead, the program goes based on the calendar year. You can learn more about sales tax in QuickBooks Self-Employed here: Sales Tax overview

I know how important it is to be able to organize your data accurately, including for tax payments to the government. If this is an essential for managing your books, I encourage you to consider on of the other QuickBooks options, such as QuickBooks Online. In the Online platform, you'll still have access to the program through the cloud and you'll be able to be more precise with your tax year by choosing the month that it begins. Learn more about making the switch here if you're already using Self-Employed: Switch from QuickBooks Self-Employed to QuickBooks Online

Otherwise, feel free to leave some feedback for the QuickBooks Self-Employed team. Here's how you can do that.

  1. Select the Assistant feature.
  2. Type and enter "feedback."
  3. Follow the prompts to leave feedback.

Comments from customers like you help us know what you're looking for in the program and then we can consider the different ways we can make changes to the program to help you better manage your books.

Give me a shout if you have further questions. Have a great day!
