Hey hbutlergardener,

Thank you for being part of the QuickBooks family for so long! The sales tax centre is an incredibly powerful part of QuickBooks Online designed to help you quickly produce accurate tax returns. Most of the advanced tracking is handled in the background, so you just need to record your transactions. To maintain consistency in your books, it's best to record HST payments directly to the tax centre. The default tax liability accounts are reserved for this function, and I'll be happy to assist in with this.

When adding a payment from the bank feed, you can easily match it to an existing sales tax payment. It's just a few easy steps to record a payment of HST:

  1. Select Taxes from the left menu.
  2. Ensure Sales Tax is shown at the top. (Tip: If you use payroll in QuickBooks Online, you may need to select Sales Tax as opposed to Payroll Tax).
  3. Next to Sales Tax at the top, find the tax agency associated with the return you'd like to prepare the return for using the drop-down.
  4. Choose Filed from the All returns drop-down.
  5. Select Record payment from the drop-down in the Action column.
  6. Select the appropriate Payment type. Tip: Select Payment if the number is positive and Refund is if the number is negative.
  7. Enter the Payment date, or the date which you paid the CRA.
  8. (Optional) Use the Memo to include anything you want to remember about this payment.
  9. Once you make the payment, you'll see it in your Account History under the date you recorded the payment.

Let me know how this goes! I want to make sure you're all set to use the tax centre.
