Hi there janette6,
Making sure that your invoices are entered correctly into your books is an important part of your bookkeeping. Quickbooks Online is a great tool to help you with managing your business's payables and receivables. I can provide some assistance.
In order to modify the invoice, you can locate it by navigating to the Sales tab, then Customers. Find your customer from within the list and click on their name to see all transactions associated with them. Click on the invoice you want to open, then select Edit invoice. You can edit the amount of the sale, the tax code or you can edit the amount of tax in the text box located under the Subtotal.
Before making any modifications, I recommend contacting your accountant for advice on what's the best way to enter this within your books. Their accounting knowledge and understanding of best business practices will be able to guide you in the right direction. If you want to add them to your QuickBooks account so they can have access to your books, you can do so in the My Accountant tab. If you're looking to find an accountant, you can find one near you by clicking on the Find a pro to help button.
If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out here.
I guess what you are saying is that you can not make a modification to the invoice without affecting the prior fiscal period?
Hello Janette290,
Making sure your prior year's transactions are in order is a vital part of managing your business's books. QuickBooks Online is a great tool to help you visualize your business's finances with ease through the use of many reports. I can provide you with some information on this.
Any changes made to an invoice, whether in a current or previous fiscal period, will affect the finances of the respective period and onwards. If you're looking to have that modification done and also have it not affect your books, recommend contacting your accountant for guidance. They'll be able to assist you in creating a transaction to reverse the changes made by modifying the invoice.
