Record payroll tax payment without tax type

Hello, Lisa.

Please note that recording payroll tax payments in QuickBooks Online (QBO) requires a Tax type to accurately track each tax separately, such as CCP, EI, etc. This ensures your CRA forms and liability balances remain accurate.

Without this classification, the system won't be able to properly reconcile payroll reports, apply overpayments, or maintain accurate historical tax records.

To address your payroll tax overpayment, follow these steps once you receive a credit notice from the CRA:

Here's how:

  1. Navigate to the All apps menu.
  2. Select Payroll taxes under the Payroll drop-down.
  3. In the Payments tab, select the overpaid tax in the ACTION NEEDED section and click Resolve to check the overpayment. They appear as negative amounts.
  4. You can then apply the overpayment to the previous year. Refer to this article for detailed guidance: Enter historical payroll tax payments in QuickBooks Online Payroll.

If you’d prefer to request a refund or apply the overpayment to the next liability period, you can contact our Live Payroll Support team during support hours. You will also need to reach out to the CRA to request the refund.

Refer to this article for more details about the process: Resolve a payroll tax overpayment.
