ReFILE or amend a T1 or T2 return in Pro Tax

SOLVEDby QuickBooks5Updated January 25, 2024

Sometimes a client may forget to give you that last slip or receipt. If a return needs to be ReFILED or amended after it has already been transmitted, Pro Tax has the capability.

In this article, you'll learn about:

About ReFILE and amend language

Staying consistent with CRA's terminology, in this article a re-submitted T1 file is referred to as being ReFILED and a re-submitted T2 is referred to as being amended.

What is ReFILE?

If you are an EFILE service provider, you can use the ReFILE service to send T1 adjustments online for tax years 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 on behalf of your clients. The ReFILE service lets you change the same lines that individual taxpayers can with the Change my Return service in My Account.

Who can use ReFILE?

Preparers can use the ReFILE service if the following conditions apply:

  • You have ProTax (for tax year 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 ReFILE)
  • The initial return was filed online using CRA's EFILE service.
  • The initial return was assessed by CRA.
  • You have acquired a new sign-off of a revised T183 from client.

Before you ReFILE or amend a return

it is always recommended to make a copy of the original return before you ReFILE/amend.

  1. Open the return in Pro Tax which has already been filed, and for which a CRA assessment has been received.
  2. Click on the Return actions drop-down menu.
  3. Select Duplicate Return.
  4. Enter the new information needed for the ReFILE in the return. For example, a client has received an unexpected T4 indicating additional income.

Use ReFILE to submit a T1 return

Follow the instructions below to ReFILE a T1 return:

  1. Navigate to the Info page of the return.
  2. Click the Filing option under Info.
  3. Select Yes for the question Amended return? (T1 ReFile).
  4. Select Go To and search for T1ReFILE.
  5. Enter the date in the Date of ReFILE field.
  6. Make sure Yes is selected in the Is this an amended tax return? field.
  7. Reprint the T183 and acquire a signature from your client giving permission to ReFILE. This is mandatory as the T183 will now have a new balance/refund amount.
  8. Click on the EFILE drop-down menu.
  9. Select ReFILE.
  10. Print the provided confirmation for your records.

If a duplicate return is created and is being filed, select T1 General and not ReFILE when attempting to ReFILE the return.

Amend a T2 return

  2. Enter any changes required on the return.

  8. Click on the EFILE drop-down menu.
  9. Select Review & EFILE.
  10. Select File Federal return.

Amend an AT1 return

  5. When prompted, answer Yes to the question Is this an amended return?

  10. Select File Alberta return to confirm amounts.
  11. Print the provided confirmation for your records.
