Transition from Classic to Modern view reports

by Intuit•1• Updated 3 weeks ago

QuickBooks Online is moving all reports to the Modern view. After May 22, 2026, the Classic version of the reports will no longer be available. The option to switch to Classic view will be removed from all Intuit products, such as QuickBooks Online, Intuit Accountant Suite, or QuickBooks Online Accountant. Modern view will be the only reporting experience for all customers.

This article explains what is changing, when it happens, and what you can expect. Your data and your saved reports will move with you.

Why we moved to Modern reports

The Classic reporting platform has served customers for many years, but we needed to evolve our system to better support your growing business. We built the new Modern platform so your reports can keep up with your business. The Modern platform lets us:

  • Add new features faster.
  • Handle large amounts of data more efficiently.
  • Give you clearer, more useful insights (such as dashboard KPIs).

What stays the same and what’s new

Your data does not change so Modern reports show the same information as Classic reports. No core actions from Classic are missing in Modern view.

What you already use is still there. You still have:

  • Reporting periods
  • Filters
  • Accounting methods
  • Display options
  • Comparisons
  • Toggles for active and zero-value rows

With Modern view, you can now:

  • Add almost any attribute column to a report.
  • Use new grouping and pivot options.
  • View your data in charts.
  • Use visual options like banded rows, colour-coded columns, and flexible gridlines.
Note: Some visual options are only available in higher plans, like QuickBooks Online Advanced.

Recent improvements to Modern reports

We’ve updated Modern reports so they match and improve on the Classic experience.

  • More space for your data: We made the top panel smaller so you have more room on the screen. The options you use most (like Display columns by and Compare to) are at the top. Other customisations sit in a panel on the right.
  • Drill-downs keep your settings: When you drill down into a transaction report and go back, your customisations stay in place.
  • Auto-refresh: If you drill down and change a transaction, the report refreshes automatically. You don’t have to refresh it yourself.
  • Easier navigation: You can scroll the whole page instead of a small box. You can use Ctrl+F (or Command+F on Mac) to search in longer reports.
  • Cleaner formatting: Reports like General Ledger and Trial Balance now follow standard accounting order (Assets, Liabilities, Equity, Income, Expenses). You can drill down into accounts with zero amounts. Rows with no activity or balance (for example, Cost of Sales when it doesn’t apply to you) are hidden by default for a cleaner view.

More improvements before the change

We’re still improving Modern view before we remove the Classic experience. Before May 22, 2026, we’ll add:

  • Improve report loading and drill-down performance.
  • Expand and collapse for sub-accounts in financial reports.
  • Report formatting like non-truncated columns, account labels, and simple date headers similar to Classic.
  • Export reports with formulas.
  • Use of your accounting method preference in financial reports.

Your saved Classic reports will move to Modern view

You don’t need to do anything to save your work. Starting May 22, 2026, we’ll automatically move all your Classic Custom reports to Modern view. Your data, filters, and customisations stay the same. They’ll just appear in the new Modern layout.

What to expect during the transition

From mid-April to May 22, 2026:

  • You can still open reports in Classic view.
  • You will no longer be able to save new customisations in Classic (for both Standard and Custom reports).
  • If you change a Classic report and want to save it, we’ll ask you to switch to Modern view to save. Your filters and grouping will carry over so you can save them in Modern view. You won’t have to re-enter them.

On May 22, 2026:

  • All Standard reports (150+ reports) will open in Modern view. The option to switch back to Classic will be removed.
  • Custom reports that were created in Classic view will move to Modern view in batches by company until all are moved.
