Learn how to discount invoices and sales receipts.
Want to give your favourite customer a discount? You can discount a percentage of an invoice, estimate, or sales receipt. If you have set discounts with fixed prices, we'll also show you how to add them as a line item on your form.
Prerequisites
Start by turning on discounts in your account settings.
- Go to Settings
and select Account and settings.
- Select the Sales tab.
- In the Sales form content section, select Edit ✎.
- Turn on Discount.
- Select Save and then select Done.
Note: If you turn off discounts while creating an invoice, it turns them off in your account settings as well.
Add a discount as a percentage of your subtotal
- Select + New.
- Select Invoice, Estimate, or Sales receipt.
- Fill out your invoice, estimate, or sales receipt.
- To record a discount, select Discount percent to enter the discount as a percentage. Or select Discount value to enter the discount as a specific amount.
- Enter the percentage or amount you want to discount in the discount field.
- Select Save.
Instead of discounting the entire transaction, you can enter a discount as a specific item with a negative rate and a description. For example, if you have a Labour Day discount of $50, you can add “Labour Day Discount” as a product or service, then enter a rate of -50. To reuse this discount later, select the item and then select + Add new.
Individual line-item discounts can only be used for whole amounts, not percentages.
