First payroll and backdating payslips

I am setting up a director owned company in quickbooks payroll. The company was incorporated in March 2020 however I have never run a payroll. How can I create backdated payslips for this period March - Dec?

Hello there, CMorganW4.

You'll want to enter payroll using the backdated date. Or, you can enter a year to date payroll within the employee settings. You can follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Workers or Payroll menu.
  2. Select Employees. Then, the employee you wish to enter YTD figures for.
  3. Hit Year to Date on the left menu.
  4. You will notice all the fields are inactive. To make the field active and available to change, click Make Adjustments on the bottom right corner.
  5. Add the Year to Date values for the appropriate fields into the Adjustments column.

Hi CMorganW4!

You can run a backdated payroll as long as it's dated in 2020. Check the detailed steps on how to pay your employees in QuickBooks Online Standard Payroll.

In addition, here's the link for more payroll-related articles: QuickBooks Online Standard Payroll hub.

I am trying to pay for time in the month March 2020 and put the payment as the 31st March.

When I try to add the pay date as the 31st March I recieve the error:

"The pay date for the payroll run does not belong to the active tax year"

If I run the pay date as the 30th April I get the error:

"The new pay date must be in the same tax period as the original period pay date"

Hello there, CMorganW4.

We're unable to create paychecks for the past year. I'd suggest reading out to us so we can unlock last year's payroll. You can click here
