Re: SSP - Accounting for 'Waiting Days' in Quickbooks Paysuite Payroll

Hi,

I am using Quickbooks Online with Paysuite for employee payroll.

Based on the information on this post https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Employees-and-Payroll/Statutory-Sick-Pay-in-PaySuite/m-p/239... I understand how to log Statutory Sick Pay against Employees. However, how would I go about adding 'Waiting Days' for the first 3 days before SSP kicks in? Or if they are only off 1 day, how would I add just one Waiting Day? Does this just go on as Unpaid Leave via the Variable Input tab in Paysuite?

Many thanks,

Alex.

Re: SSP - Accounting for 'Waiting Days' in Quickbooks Paysuite Payroll

Hello Alex,

So when adding SSP it takes the three days into account. You add the sickness from when they first went of sick. This will then look at the 3 day period and then calculate SSP from then after.

To be entitled to SSP they have to have the three day waiting period unless this is a linked absence. If they are only off one day and wouldn't be paid sick from the business this would just be marked as unpaid, you are best doing this by putting the employee as Variable and then calculate what they are owed minus the sick day.

Hope this has helped.

Thanks.

Re: SSP - Accounting for 'Waiting Days' in Quickbooks Paysuite Payroll

Thanks Amanda. That's useful the SSP function takes the waiting days into account.

One final question - If the employee was off 4 or 5 times over a couple of months on separate days (within the 56 day window) would this mean they qualify for SSP or do the 'Waiting Days' have to be in one single block? I.e. Do the single days off sick link up or would it only link up if there was another period of SSP (3+ days) within the 56 day time frame?

Thanks,
Alex.

Re: SSP - Accounting for 'Waiting Days' in Quickbooks Paysuite Payroll

Hey,

The they would still be entitled to SSP as long as all sicknesses are linked, They still have to do the 3+ days in a row. As stated in this link with HMRC they state they have to be off '4 days or More in a row'

https://www.gov.uk/statutory-sick-pay

So if they are off for two days and then come back but end up back on the sick the waiting period will just start again until they have done 3+ days off on the sick in a row.

Thanks.

Re: SSP - Accounting for 'Waiting Days' in Quickbooks Paysuite Payroll

Hi Amanada,

I have created SSP for employee and can see it on their payslip but can I check with you if I need to do anything else? As I can see the SSP is added to base salary, is that correct?

Re: SSP - Accounting for 'Waiting Days' in Quickbooks Paysuite Payroll

Hi Farah

If you only want to pay the employee the SSP and the days they actually worked you will have to adjust their basic salary accordingly.

Thanks John,

would it be appropriate to deduct off days from base salary as unpaid leave and SSP will be added anyway?

Hi Farah

You can simply deduct the SSP amount from the basic salary as technically it is not unpaid leave it is sick leave.

Didn't quite get that.

In simple words, we are paying them SSP and deducting number of sick days off?

Re: SSP - Accounting for 'Waiting Days' in Quickbooks Paysuite Payroll

Hi Farah,

To clarify, you can change the employee's 'Pay Basis' to variable pay within their settings (employee > payment and deductions tab) and then calculate and manually enter the basic salary using the 'Variable Input' tab as an adjustment, so that you are paying them only for the days that they worked. The SSP will be calculated and show on the payslip separately.

Thanks
