Unable to connect to HMRC to submit VAT return despite registering for MTD last year - I've since submitted returns with no problems.

I have the steps you can perform to connect with HMRC so you can submit a VAT return, @rees-faidre

You're on the right track in registering MTD last year. Here are the possible reasons you're unable to connect with HMRC when filing a VAT return:

  • There's no confirmation email from HMRC advising that you can file using MTD.
  • The login MTD details you've used are incorrect.
  • The VAT registration number isn't correct in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

First, let's make sure you've received an email confirmation from HMRC. Second, let's ensure you used the correct MTD login credentials when authorising QuickBooks to interact with HMRC.

Third, let's go to the Taxes menu and select Edit VAT settings. This way, you can review your VAT registration number in the program. See the screenshot below for your visual reference.

Also, you can click Learn More in the VAT Centre to fix this. For more troubleshooting steps, see the We can't connect to HMRC right now section through this article: Take Action To Complete Your MTD Submission

However, if the issue persists, I'd suggest disconnecting and reconnecting the MTD feature since you've submitted returns without any problems before. It helps refresh the connection between the HRMC and QBO. I'll guide you how.

To disable the MTD connection:

  1. Go to the Gear (Settings) icon at the upper right.
  2. Select Account and settings under Your Company.
  3. Go to Advanced from the left menu.
  4. Choose Making Tax Digital
  5. Click the Learn how to disconnect button.

You can also click Turn off MTD in the Edit VAT settings window to disconnect it.

Once done, enable MTD again. Then, submit your VAT return to the HMRC.

Moreover, you can run any VAT reports in the software. One of them is the VAT Detail report. It helps you view the transactions that are included in each box on the VAT return. Just go to the Reports or Taxes menu to complete this task.

I'm always here to help if you need anything else. Enjoy the rest of your day, @rees-faidre
