Complete monthly client reviews in QuickBooks Online Accountant

Use the monthly review tool in QuickBooks Online Accountant to focus on essential bookkeeping tasks for each client and manage your workflow effectively.

Keeping track of specific tasks can be challenging with multiple clients. The monthly review tool helps you manage this by listing open tasks within each client's QuickBooks Online account, organised by type. This allows you to review and prioritise work efficiently each month.


Start a monthly review

Access the monthly review tool directly from your client's QuickBooks Online account.

  1. Open your client's QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Select Accountant tools, then Monthly review.
  3. Choose the specific month for the review from the dropdown menu.

The tool organises tasks into three tabs. Begin with the Transaction Review tab.


Step 1: Review transactions

The Transaction Review tab highlights transactions needing attention, such as uncategorised items or those with missing details (indicated by blank lines in columns). QuickBooks flags these automatically.

  1. Select any transaction listed to open its details.
  2. Make necessary corrections to ensure the information is complete and accurate.

(Optional) Add Custom Tasks: For additional checks, explore the Additional items section, which includes common tasks performed by other accounting firms.

  • To include your own specific monthly checks (like reviewing problematic accounts), select + Add and enter the task details.

Step 2: Reconcile accounts quickly

Navigate to the Account reconciliation tab to see accounts requiring reconciliation.

  1. Review the list, using the last reconciled date as a guide. The Unaccepted and Unreconciled columns show the volume of outstanding transactions for each account.
  2. Select an account to begin the reconciliation process.

Step 3: Check for account balance issues

Complete your review using the Final review tab, which lists standard reports for monthly checks.

  1. Select Review next to a report name to open it. QuickBooks automatically filters the report for the selected month.
  2. Review the generated reports for accuracy and any potential issues.

(Optional) To add other relevant reports to your standard monthly review process, select Add.
