View and manage your MTD Income Tax obligations in QuickBooks

Learn who needs to follow MTD for Income Tax rules and how to view your submission deadlines in QuickBooks.
Understanding your obligations
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) is a new way of reporting earnings to HMRC for Sole Traders and Landlords. Instead of sending a single Income tax return once a year, you send quarterly updates for your business income, and a year-end tax return.
QuickBooks Online connects to your day-to-day bookkeeping data to help you create these updates and file them directly to HMRC.
Who needs to submit updates?
HMRC is introducing these rules in phases based on your total qualifying income (gross income from self-employment and property combined).
- From April 2026: You must sign up if your qualifying income for the 2024 to 2025 tax year is over ÂŁ50,000.
- From April 2027: You must sign up if your qualifying income for the 2025 to 2026 tax year is over ÂŁ30,000.
If you are a landlord or sole trader under these thresholds, you can still sign up voluntarily to keep on top of your taxes.
Your reporting tasks
To remain compliant with MTD for IT, you must use QuickBooks to complete three key tasks:
- Quarterly updates: At least once every three months, you must send a summary of your business income and expenses to HMRC.
- Tax estimates: Because you send data to HMRC more often, HMRC can show you an estimate of how much tax you might owe based on your submissions, helping you budget better.
- Final declaration: At the end of the tax year, you finalise your business income, add personal details (like marriage allowance) and any non-business income, and submit your final declaration.
