Error: -6000, -77 when opening a company file

by Intuit Updated 4 months ago

There are several solutions we recommend if the following error appears when attempting to open a company file:

We're sorry. QuickBooks encountered a problem. Error codes: (-6000, -77).

Possible quick fixes:

  • Re-launching QuickBooks Desktop with elevated permissions may resolve the issue. Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon on your desktop and select Run as Administrator.
  • If the company file is saved on an external drive, copy the company file locally.

Solution 1: Run the File Doctor from the QuickBooks Tools Hub

Download and install the QuickBooks Tools Hub and run the File Doctor. See Fix company file and network issues with QuickBooks File Doctor.

Solution 2: Rename .ND and .TLG files

.ND and .TLG are configuration files that allow QuickBooks Desktop to access the company file(s) in a network or in the multi-user mode. Corrupted or damaged .ND or .TLG files can cause errors when opening QuickBooks Desktop. Renaming these files does not cause data loss since these are automatically recreated when you open the company file or scan the company files using QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

  1. Open the folder that contains your company file.
    Default Location: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files
  2. Find the files with the same file name as your company file but with extensions .ND and .TLG.
    Example: company_file.qbw.nd, company_file.qbw.tlg
  3. Right-click .nd/.tlg file and select Rename. Add the word ".old" after the file extension and press enter.
    Example: company_file.qbw.nd.OLD, company_file.qbw.tlg.OLD

Solution 3: Use a UNC path instead of a mapped drive

  1. Right-click the QuickBooks icon on your desktop, press and hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard, and select Run as Administrator. Hold down the Ctrl key until you have the No Company Open window.
Note: Holding down the Ctrl key prevents QuickBooks Desktop from auto-opening a company file.
  2. From the File menu, select Open or Restore Company then Open a company file then Next.
  3. In the left pane, select Network, and navigate to the location of your company file.
Note: If you can't find the folder where the company file is saved, you may need to set folder permissions.
  4. Select the company file and select Open.

Solution 4: Configure firewall and security software

For detailed steps, check out Configure Firewall and Internet security settings.

Solution 5: Recreate the damaged folder

  1. Create a new folder on your C: drive.
  2. Open the folder where the company file is saved.
  3. Locate the .qbw file.
    Example: company_file.qbw
  4. Right-click the .qbw file and select Copy.
  5. Open the new folder, then Paste the file.
  6. Set Windows access permissions to share company files.
  7. Open QuickBooks Desktop and open the file from the new location.
